Open Drafting

Open drafting is a popular mechanic that adds interaction and strategic tension to a game by allowing players to choose components from a common, visible pool (Unlike Closed Drafting). This shared setup gives players insight into what resources or abilities are accessible, while also exposing potential choices that their opponents might want.

Each player takes turns selecting items, whether they are cards, tiles, or tokens, which reduces the available options for everyone else. As a result, players must prioritize their selections and decide whether to take an item to advance their own game plan or to deny it to an opponent who could benefit.

The open drafting mechanic is often seen in games that emphasize planning and adaptability. Players are encouraged to watch their opponents’ actions and adjust their strategies accordingly. Counter-drafting, a common tactic in open drafting, is when a player intentionally picks a component they might not need solely to block an opponent’s access to it. This mechanic fosters a competitive atmosphere and requires players to consider not only their own needs but also the broader game dynamics.
